Coastal Carolina Heritage:Life and Work in the Carolinas
This course will provide a look into and visit to some of our region's historical facts, local stories, folklore, old photographs, religious traditions, poetry and artifacts to create a sense of time and place. Topics will range from the Scottish immigration of the 1700s to Gullah culture and traditions, the history of the Rosenwald Schools, the work of locally born and nationally known poet A.R. Ammon, river and railroad travel networks, the timber industry, introduction of strawberries to the region, smoke houses and more. Three of the 8 classes will include an on-site visits to cover three distinct regions of Brunswick County. This class counts toward the Heritage Guide Certificate Pathway.
